How Workplace Environment Impacts Creativity
Workplace environment impacts creativity from my experience and from creativity research. Dr. Teresa Amabile set out to create a social psychology of creativity as a PhD candidate at Stanford University in 1972 and continuing in her role as professor at Harvard Business School. She was the first to study the impact of workplace environment on creativity and identify the three elements that must be present to produce creativity. One element is expertise, technical skill, and innate talent in the domain of the creative endeavor. A second element is the processes needed for creativity. The third element is intrinsic motivation or the desire to engage in work because it is interesting to you or you have high curiosity driving the work. Dr. Amabile then studied how the workplace environment impacts these three elements needed for creativity.
